Sunny from Sunnydayvintage was kind enough to offer one of my lucky readers a chance to win a gorgeous vintage 1950s brocade dresser set. Any boudoir needs a classic set like this. Add this special touch of decoration, to make your dressing space just that much more feminine and special.
Name, where you reside, your history, etc. –
My nickname is Sunny and I live in Chicago with my husband and our little dog. I have a degree in interior design, my husband is a designer and we both love vintage goods.
What started your love for vintage?
I think it was a gradual appreciation for old things with soul. In design school, I was all about modern and contemporary – which are great, but after we married, our taste evolved into a more traditional look. Some special pieces came to us from family over the years, which added to our respect for heirlooms.
Do you have an absolute favorite piece?
That's a tough one. Maybe the antique ginger jars that were in my husband's family – they're deep Chinese red, bold and simple. But I also love the round marble-topped end table with acanthus leaf base I found for $25 on Craigslist!
Can you describe your process for selecting items for your store?
I focus on good quality pieces that are well made, in a wonderful color, iconic for their time or just quirky. Sometimes I choose something just because I like it, and think someone else will too.
What is your own personal style like?
In clothing, I'm kinda casual and tailored. I can wear jeans to work and I like to accessorize in bold ways. I have a small watch collection and I love scarves and wraps. In home design, we're into updated traditional, with pale neutrals, lots of red and some leopard print thrown in for fun.
Besides running an online store, what else takes up your time?
My day job, my family… and all those estate sales I go to! It's fun, and I enjoy staying busy. My Etsy shop is a labor of love, and I enjoy every minute I spend on it.
What styles are you excited to see/sport this fall season?
I love the plaid thing, though I tend to look like a lumberjack when I wear it. That's why the red plaid Kangol I have in my shop intrigued me: even a girl like me can pull off a plaid beret, right?
Where do you gather your inspiration?
When I see something special, it speaks to me. It's instinctive. Plus, I have a big love for all the things that make a home a nest. I like to think I can recognize a good piece when I see it.
Any home decorating advice you would like to share?
Buy what you love and trust your instincts. Spend as much as you can on the big pieces: table and chairs, bed, good seating and lighting. And if you make a mistake, you can always sell it on Craigslist.

ReplyDeleteWhat I really like about Sunnyday Vintage is how many USEFUL things there are! I live in a vintage house, myself, which means tiny; I can't ever buy the knick knacks and masses of fancy-dinner plates that make up a lot of vintage shops. But there are all sort of things in Sunny's shop that I could totally justify buying for daily use, and replace a few trips to the Megamart! Hurrah!
ReplyDeletecarapacenator(at)gmail.com
Eeep! Accidentally deleted this first post! That's no good!
ReplyDeleteI crave that dresser set! But my favorite thing in Sunny's shop right now is this Cavalier Guardsmen Shoeshine box-- think I'll put it on my Christmas list:
