Goodwill outlet

I've always heard of the lucky souls that get to buy clothing by the pound, and yearned for the day that I could experience it myself.
I had to pick up some basic tee's for my pizza project and headed over to the goodwill outlet, totally unsure of what to expect.
(yes I did have a dream about it the night before I was so excited.)
There are just giant bins that people rummage through, and everything costs 30 cents, unless its clothing which is 50 cents a pound.
The exciting part is seeing the odd things people find. (Example- A remote that when you press the buttons female sex noises emit from it in static bursts. What?)

When the store brings out a new bin, everyone stands around waiting for the employees to finish situating the goods. No one is allowed to move until everything is set into place, and you are bound to get some nasty stares if you break any of the rules or attempt to squeeze into a spot. Then they pounce like zombies on a fresh body. It's one of the most amusing human activities I've ever witnessed. I had no idea how to react! However, I was compelled NOT to interrupt their ritual.

I found a lovely frame as well as a plastic vertebra which I am dying to cast in bronze.

My best find was a trunk for a dollar. A dollar! All the furniture is dirt cheap, and perfect for anyone that likes a good DIY project.
I'm going to cover the inside with vintage newspapers and the outside is going to be painted black with various art stickers I've collected from shows and galleries. I'll show pictures when completed!

The moral of the story is, check google to see if you have one of these nearby and be sure to check it out for the experience alone. If you're willing to dig you're bound to leave with at least one exciting find.

  1. that sounds intense! we don't have anything like that in philadelphia (or on the east coast, at least that i know of). the pay-per-pound places i've visited in san fran were mild, to say the least. definitely no pushing or shoving!

  2. I've never heard of this before, but it sounds entertaining! I love the trunk you found, can't wait to see how it turns out!

  3. Woah, this is very intriguing indeed! I'm v impressed with the trunk. Definitely worth braving the hard core per-pound shoppers!
New Mexico, huh? Definitely on my radar, I visiting briefly during my road trip this year but definitely didn't see as much of it as I wanted to!
